Allah-Las came back together after 4 years to create Zuma 85— an album full of funky rockin' beats and instrumentals. The album consists of 13 songs each one unique in its own way, that all come together to tell a marvelous story. For each song in the album, you feel transported into different universes. “Jelly”, unsurprisingly, feels like you are swimming through a pool of jello with its funk instrumentals; “Hadal Zone” feels like you are floating through an abyss. “Fontaine” feels like you’re walking through a whimsical land of magic, and “Pattern” is like you're riding on a horse through the desert towards sunset. The whole album is 70s and 80s music reimagined, and listening through it all, you feel transported into the past. I listened to it on the train going to upstate New York, and it definitely put me into the right mood. The entire time, all I could think about was how I should be laying in a field or on a hill smoking with some friends watching the sunset. The album sets you into a dreamy state that makes you just want to sway back and forth. The soft and smoothness of the lyrics in each song add to the dreaminess of the album. The lyrics of most of the songs are very hypnotic and playful in their language and imagery, building on the 1970 dreamscape created through the instrumentals. If you are looking for a great album to chill out to mellow beats this is definitely the right album for you. I will definitely be playing it among friends. “Jelly”, “Sky Club”, “Dust”, and “The Fall” are definitely my favorites from the album, but I definitely recommend giving a listen to the whole album.
